Dr. Cory Mixdorf, Assistant Professor of Trombone at Georgia State University, presented a masterclass and recital yesterday at the University of Iowa. The masterclass was based on Dr. Mixdorf’s doctoral thesis – “Programmatic Elements of Orchestral Excerpts.” Using examples from standard orchestral excerpts, Dr. Mixdorf showed how understanding the program of the work can help us further our understanding of the piece and assist trombonists in preparing the excerpt for auditions or a performance.
The recital in the evening was presented as follows:
Piece in Eb minor – Joseph Guy Ropartz (1864-1955)
Four Scriptorial Songs – Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Denn es gehet dem Menschen
O Tod, wie bitter bist du
Piece Concertante – Carlos Salzedo (1885-1961)
Aria from Rusalka – Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)
T. Rex – Mark Phillips (b. 1952)
Trombone Institute of Technology – Michael Davis
Lee Nguyen, piano
Jonathan Allen, trombone (Davis)
